SHORT COURSE FOR THE APSA 1993 MEETINGS Beyond Refereed Journals: Writing About Politics for Popular Audiences Sponsored by the Public Policy Section of the APSA and The American Prospect TIME: Wednesday September 1, 2:00 - 4:30 pm This course will offer advice for political scientists who aspire to write for non-academic audiences. Topics include: NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES: What are the various outlets for writing about politics and public policy? What do politics editors look for? How do authors get assignments to write for magazines? How do you get an op-ed piece published? What kind of editing should you expect from a magazine or newspaper editor? What kind of payment can you expect and how do you negotiate it? TRADE BOOKS: What are the differences between the trade book market and the academic market? What do trade book editors look for in a manuscript? What tell-tale signs of an academic monograph repel trade book editors? How do write a book that gains respect among your peers but still gains shelf-space in the bookstores? TECHNIQUE: How do you turn dry academic prose into a lively story? What are the stylistic differences between academic and popular writing? How is narrative strategy different? What is a "lead" and how do you write one? How do you credit sources without using footnotes?
